Club History
The Lloyd’s Motor Club was formed in 1951 by a number of enthusiasts in the London insurance market, following an upsurge of interest in motoring and motor sport after the Second World War. Membership was, and remains, available to those connected with the Lloyd’s and Company markets of the London insurance industry, whether broking, underwriting or providing any ancillary services.
At its peak in the 1970s and 1980s, membership ran well into four figures; after a quiet spell in the early 1990s, numbers have once again been increasing rapidly in recent years, with an ever-expanding range of events in which members and their guests can attend and participate. We are very fortunate to count Sir Stirling Moss as our first Honorary Member; Sir Stirling has been a great supporter of LMC events over the years.
Having run its own sprint meetings at Brands Hatch and Lydden Hill in the 1950s, the club was able to expand its sporting activities when it was invited to join the Eight Clubs in 1968 and participate in their annual event at Silverstone. Although this meeting ran for the last time in 2006, today’s LMC members are still able to avail themselves of exclusive circuit-hire events such as our two long-standing track days at Goodwood and our annual Karting Day at Buckmore Park, one of the country’s leading outdoor karting venues.
What was formerly the social highlight of the club’s year - the Dinner - resumed in 1999 after an absence of many years and is now a biennial event, much to the pleasure of those long-standing members who retain fond memories of the rather politically incorrect events of the past, which would often draw the LMC to the attention of the national motoring press!
Other popular events include regular Prestige Motor Forums – free presentations by motor manufacturers held at lunchtimes in the Old Library at Lloyd’s – and also Celebrity Lunches and Suppers, stands at Classic Car shows and factory visits.
We maintain an up-to-date events website at http://lmc.vitacity.co.uk/ alongside this “heritage” site, and we issue a monthly e-Newsletter, an annual magazine and regular LMC News bulletins to everyone on our e-mailing list, with printed versions also being distributed throughout the insurance market.
